Archiving Policy – JournalStack

Ensuring long-term preservation and permanent availability of scholarly content

Introduction

JournalStack is committed to the long-term preservation of all published research content. This Archiving Policy outlines the systems and protocols used to ensure that all articles remain permanently accessible.

Digital Preservation Systems Used

  • PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN)
  • LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe)
  • CLOCKSS (Controlled LOCKSS)
  • Internet Archive (when applicable)
  • Institutional & subject repositories

PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN)

  • Provides free automated preservation for journals using OJS
  • JournalStack integrates with PKP PN for secure distributed archiving
  • Content is continually checked for integrity and retrievability

LOCKSS Program

  • Ensures decentralized preservation via library-run storage nodes
  • Allows libraries to maintain local copies for redundancy
  • Content remains available even if the primary hosting becomes unavailable

CLOCKSS Program

  • Secure “dark archive” for permanent preservation
  • Content is released only if the journal is unavailable
  • Ensures preservation through a community-governed network

Self-Archiving Policy (Green OA)

JournalStack supports author self-archiving of all article versions:

  • Preprint (submitted manuscript)
  • Postprint (peer-reviewed accepted version)
  • Final published Version of Record (VoR)

Authors may deposit articles in institutional repositories, subject repositories, or personal websites without embargo.

 Indexing & Redundancy

  • All articles include metadata for OAI-PMH harvesting
  • Content may also be archived by Google Scholar, BASE, CORE & institutional databases
  • Ensures redundancy and reliability across global indexing systems

Permanent URL Policy

  • Every article receives a permanent DOI identifier
  • DOIs ensure stable access even if URLs change
  • Metadata is registered with Crossref for global scholarly discovery

Data Integrity & Backups

  • Regular backups of manuscripts, PDF layouts, metadata & files
  • Backups stored in multiple secure locations
  • Ensures resilience against data loss
